Alphaghetto
Twenty Something EP

Another fine free release from Ryan Stinson’s Gestalt Collective, Alphaghetto puts Chapter Thrive’s party raps over Stinson’s funky, inventive beats. Alphaghetto use shock to grab attention early, opening with “Casual Touch,” a song about one night stands that gets a touch of perversion from tongue-in-cheek horrorcore rapper Lexington. The duo keep heads nodding – at the very least – with two songs about time (“Keep the Feet Moving” and “oneday@atime”) before a busy phone signal introduces Stinson’s minimal, old school beat on “Busy Signal,” a unique take on the break up song. A wicked native chant is the centrepiece of march-like “Chiplock,” which gets put to good use by Chapter Thrive with his silly raps and a simple, stilted flow (which is, by the way, a compliment!). They end with “Long Gone,” a sorrowful, though-provoking song that again touches on the topic of time. While Twenty Something proves the two have a good chemistry together, it should be interesting to see where they go from here. Whatever it is, hopefully it’s as something other than Alphaghetto, though. [Thomas Quinlan]
